초등학교 1, 2 학년 때, 식목일에만 심은 게 분명한 어린 나무들이 듬성듬성 박혀 있는 나트막한 야산과 정리되지 않은 논밭, 거름 구덩이를 배경으로 커다란 입간판이 서 있었다. “80년도 100억 불 수출 1000 불 소득”. 달콤했던 그 어린 시절에는 귀한 만큼 달콤한 게 좋았다. 견학갔던 설탕공장의 냄새, 설탕을 넣고 으깬 삶은 감자, 건빵에 든 별사탕, 설탕과 소다를 불에 녹인 뽑기. 입에 다 들어가지도 않을 만큼 커다란 눈깔사탕. 세상도 달콤한 줄만 알았다. 게다가 10년이 지나면 세상은 더욱 달콤해질 줄 알았다. 세상이 달콤하지만은 않다는 것을 알만한 나이가 되면서 그림을 시작한 나는, 이번에는 미술이야말로 달콤한 것이라는 생각을 하게 되었다. 그리고 당연히 달콤한 그림을 그리고 싶었다. 조화, 통일, 균형, 대비, 질감, 양감, 빛, 공간, 채도, 명도, 표현, 의미, 형태, 운동감, 형식, 구성, 질서 그리고 독창성. 그런데 이것들이 다 뭐였더라? 달콤한 것들은 금방 물려 버린다. 수분을 증발시키고 남은 설탕 덩어리(쨈)로 그린 이 작품을 보고 혹자는 70 년대 모노크롬 회화에 대한 비판이라는 말도 하겠지. 그러나 아무려면 어떠랴. 이제 남은 일은 곰팡이가 피기만을 기다리면 된다. 곰팡이의 균사(菌絲)가 달콤한 것들을 다 덮어버려야 할텐데...

I remember a big sign I saw when I was in the first or second year of elementary school. It stood in front of the hills covered with young trees that must have been planted on the latest Arbor day, some uncultivated rice fields and dung pits. It said “ in the eighties, 10 billion dollar export, 1000 dollar income per capita” I loved sweet things in that sweet age. The smell of candy in the candy factory we visited for a class, mashed potato with some sugar in it, star-shaped candy in small dried bread and a big eyeball-shaped candy, etc. . . I thought the world was sweet, too, and expected it would become even sweeter ten years later. I, who began to paint when I came to learn the world is not so sweet, came to think that art is really sweet, this time. Naturally I wanted to paint sweet paintings. Harmony, unity, proportion, balance, contrast, texture, volume, light, space, hue, value, expression, meaning, form, movement, style, composition, order and originality etc . . . But, now I am wondering what these are. You become easily sick of the sweet. Seeing my works painted with fruit jam, one might think it is a criticism on Korean monochrome painting in the seventies. Who cares? All I have to do is to wait and see the must grow. I wish the pilei of fungi would cover the sweet soon. . .
