영상작가로 알려진 공성훈은 수년전부터 밤의 풍경을 그리는 회화작업에 전념하고 있다. 작가가 살고 있는 서울의 변방, 벽제의 밤풍경은 인적이 끊긴 장소들을 사실적으로 묘사해 보여주지만 붉고 푸른 조명이 연출하는 황량한 분위기는 마치 몽유병 환자의 시선으로 바라보는 장면들과 흡사하다. 그러나 낮에는 익숙한 이 장소들이 차가운 밤의 공기만큼이나 섬뜩하게 표현할 수 있는 회화적 표현력은 전적으로 이 작가가 습관적으로 반복하는 오랜 야행을 통한 관찰 경험 탓이다. 그의 야간 이동은 주로 차로 이루어지며, 마치 범인이 나타나기를 기다리며 잠복근무하고 있는 형사처럼 그림 속의 그 문제장면을 사진에 담고 난 후 거기서 한참을 머무른다. 사진은 그 장면을 사실적으로 담아내는 데 불과하지만 작가의 눈에 그 장소의 영혼을 기록하자면 좀 더 오랜 시간이 필요하기 때문이다. 박 만 우 | 2006 부산비엔날레 현대미술전 전시감독 및 큐레이터
For the past several years, the video artist Sung Hun Kong has been painting night scenes of Byekje, where he lives on the northern outskirts of Seoul. The paintings are realistic renderings of the deserted town at night. However, the red and green lights create scenes that are akin to what a sleepwalker might see. The familiar places of the daytime feel as startling as the cold night air in theses paintings. Their expressiveness is derived from the artist’s long-term observations during his habitual nighttime journeys. He moves at night mostly by car. Like an undercover detective waiting for a criminal to appear, the artist takes photographs of a particular scene and stays there for a while. While the camera captures the facts, the artist absorbs the soul of the place, which takes more time. Park, Man-Woo | Director of Busan Biennale 2006
